A failed run capacitor, a seized contactor, a bad fan motor bearing, a cracked control board, a stuck thermostat: these are electrical and mechanical failures that get fixed the same way regardless of what refrigerant is in the lines. If the compressor is healthy, the coil isn't leaking, and the unit holds its charge between visits, a component repair is the right call and the cheaper one.
A single, findable leak (a bad Schrader valve core, a loose flare fitting, a pinhole in an accessible line) is also usually worth sealing and recharging, especially on a system under 12 to 15 years old that has been reliable otherwise. An R-22 system cannot be converted to R-410A or A2L refrigerant. Different pressures, different oils, different components top to bottom. When an R-22 system reaches end of life, it gets replaced with new A2L equipment (R-32 or R-454B, depending on the manufacturer), not retrofitted. The existing line set can sometimes be reused after a pressure test, but any line that carried R-22 needs a chemical flush first, because the mineral oil an R-22 compressor used leaves residue that fouls the synthetic oil new A2L equipment runs.
